1969

The first Association (BRITISH COLUMBIA CHILD CARE SERVICES ASSOCIATION) was formed by the Directors / Managers of Child Care Agencies to discuss common concerns such as; funding , staffing and training, and to organize an annual conference for frontline workers.

1974

The Association examines the expansion of its Executive membership, of Directors / Managers to include frontline workers.

1976

At the Annual BCCCSA. Conference, the Association approved the inclusion of frontline workers as full members.  Three Regions officially recognized: Vancouver, North Island and Victoria.

Code of Ethics Adopted.

1977

Association representative appointed to the Advisory Board of the School of Child Care, University of Victoria.

1978

New Constitution and Bylaw promoting regionalization was adopted by the membership.

1979

First “Beyond Caring” Conference held in May 1979, in Victoria, BC.

Regionalization activities promoted the establishment of two new Regions; South Okanagan and Prince Rupert Region.

1980

Began Public Awareness Campaign to promote child care in BC.

Task force on Legislation successfully argued for a review of the social Services Personnel Act due to it’s inappropriateness for Child Care and other human services groups.

Struck an Education and Training Committee to develop educational resources and opportunities for members of the Association. 

1981

Sponsored the First National Child Care workers Conference May 1981.

First Delegates Convention to amend Constitution held in January 1981. CHILD AND

Child Care Newsletter becomes a quarterly “Child Care in B.C”.

Peace River-Liard Region established.

1982

First Canadian Child Care Association to be given full membership status in NOCCWA – THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF CHILD CARE WORKER ASSOCIATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES.

Certification Committee struck to develop a suitable registration / certification process for Child Care Workers in BC.

Prince George Region established.

1983

BEYOND CARING, Provincial Conference.

1987

Formation of National Child and Youth Care Assn.

BCCCSA changes name to Child and Youth Care Assn. of BC.

All in the Family Provincial Conference held.

1988

Tricks of the Trade Provincial Conference, Workshops held as fundraisers in some regions. South West Region held a Casino raising $13,000.00 for Provincial and Regional activities. Standards Committee was formed this year.

1989

Celebration Provincial Conference celebrated the twenty year mark in our history. Self-regulation committee was formed this year.

1990

CYCABC hires Executive Assistant, another first for Child and Youth Care Assn. Also hired a student to work with self-regulation. Funds were provided from Challenge 91.

1995

The society becomes inactive.

2003

December – A Master’s and PHD student from UVIC Robert Bates takes on the project to revitalize the association. They work with a few other people to set up an on line election of a new executive.

2004

January – A new executive is elected and completes the following: enlists a web designer to create a web site, reviews the previous by-laws and constitution, develops relationships with previous executive members, seeks legal advice to restore society to good standing, meets with Liberal politicians to promote the professionalization of child and youth care. Develops new by-laws and constitution.

2011

June – Board sends out a message of a motion passed at the board meeting in May that stipulated without the election of at least 9 members to the board we would be ceasing operations of the association.  At the AGM on June 24th, 2011; twelve people were elected to the Board.

Serving on the board executive are: Amy Woodruffe, Chair; Rebecca Ataya, Vice-Chair; Robert Bates, Recorder-Secretary; and Lori Rose, Treasurer; Elaine Kaitlyn Wong, Ginna Abramovitch, Janet Westcott, Les Thibedeau, Marie Breton, Suki Pangalia, Tam Basaraba Tupper, and Tara Skobel.

November 2011 – Amy Woodruffe resigns from board leaving 8 members on the Executive board.  Three members had resigned from the board prior to Amy’s resignation.

2012

May 25th CYCABC AGM.  Vikki Reynolds and Naila Dharshi were our volunteer speakers both did a great job and the Association is very thankful and grateful to them both.  2011- 2012 was a working year for the board.  The following was achieved:

·         the formation of 7 new committees with completed mandates and action plans

·         a revision of our by-laws

·         a developed communication protocol

·         an implemented networking group

·         an electronic membership package

·         a value’s framework

·         working relationships with each other that is allowing the CYCABC to move forward and begin supporting the CYC professionals of BC.

The membership elected Rebecca Ataya, Tara Skobel, Elaine Wong and Jennifer Kanoga onto the board; each had been appointed into an executive role on the board earlier in the year to fill vacancies on the board.  They join board members Ginna Abramovitch, Tam Basaraba-Tupper, Janet Westcott and Suki Pangalia.

The membership approved a slate of changes to the CYCABC By-Laws; the changes reflect a more simple nomination process, a decrease in the size of the board from 12 to eight, and updated the information about committees and membership

2013

April 5th, 2013 CYCABC AGM.  Our guest speakers this year were Robin Swets and Stephanie Ball whom spoke on a new youth engagement toolkit that will be ready for the community in the Summer of 2013.  Carol Stuart spoke on professionalizes and the lifespace.  She engaged us with the of how we professionalize the field that is based on values and read a story from her book.

 The CYCABC membership tripled this year and I am so proud to be a part of this association and connected to all of you.  In the past year we have:

·         Developed a new website that is more user friendly

·         Continue to maintain the CYCABC google group were you are able to post any events, referrals, news, updates to programs and training opportunities to the CYCABC member base

·         Seeking and finding training opportunities for CYCABC members in BC at discounted prices

·         Developed and implemented a communication protocol

·         Continues to represent BC on the Council of Canadian CYC Associations

·         Sit on and represent CYC on the following committees: CSPC Families Advisory Committee, Camosun Community, Families and Child Studies Advisory Committee and the BC Education Consortium of Child and Youth Care Programs

·         Weekly news clippings and job posting for our members

 The board said good-bye and thank you for all their hard work to Elaine Wong, Suki Pangalia and Ginna Abramovitch.  The membership elected Rebecca Ataya and Janet Westcott, Tam Basaraba-Tupper,. Corie Potter-Lowden, Sarah Macdonald and Krishna Sharma. They join board members Tara Skobel and Jennifer Kanoga.
